Direct hire refers to finding a domestic worker on your own and using an employment agency for visa documentation only. When some let the agency do all the work, direct hire allows you to have full control of the hiring process and gives you more freedom to pick the worker you like.
Identify the new domestic helper you want to hire
You can find a new helper by friend referral, Facebook groups or online platforms such as HelperChoice. You should know the difference between hiring a helper currently working in your country and hiring one who is in her home country or working in another country. This usually has a big impact on processing fees, procedure and time.

Find an ethical agency or handle the paperwork yourself
The process differs depending on your helper’s contract status and nationality, local and helper's home country's regulations, and on whether you use an agency or make the application yourself.
HelperChoice has ethical partner agencies in Hong Kong and in Singapore to help with the visa processing. If you would like to have a quotation, fill in this form for Hong Kong employers or this form for Singapore employers.
Send the helper to medical checkup
A medical checkup before departure is required if the helper is in her home country. An extra medical checkup may be optional depending on your local government's regulation. Currently, a medical check-up upon helper's arrival is optional in Hong Kong and Singapore, while it's required by some Middle Eastern countries such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
If your helper-to-be is already working in your country, it's not required to do a medical checkup. Yet, you may want to send her for a check. There are packages offered by medical groups locally.
Buy the helper a personal insurance
As an employer, you are responsible for your domestic helper's medical expenses if it happens during the work period. We strongly recommend you take out a personal insurance to cover the medical expenses. In some countries like Singapore and the GCC countries, the personal insurance also covers security bonds requested by the Philippine government, and you will get a compensation for helper replacement expenses. The insurance should be subscribed about 2 weeks before your helper starts.
In Hong Kong, HelperChoice partners with a leading insurance provider for helper insurance packages. Read this article for more information.
